The name Art nouveau is French for 'new art', it is also known as Jugendstil, German for 'youth style', named after the magazine Jugend, which promoted it. It is characterized by organic, especially floral and other plant-inspired motifs, as well as highly-stylized, flowing curvilinear forms. Art Nouveau is an approach to design, according to which artists should work on everything from architecture to furniture, making art part of everyday life. Art Nouveau's fifteen year peak was strongly felt throughout Europe, from Glasgow to Spain and as far East as Moscow, but its influence was global.

Archibald Knox was born in the Isle of Man of Scottish parenthood. His designs were synonymous with British Art Nouveau and he is regarded as being a prominent influence in the Arts and Crafts movement. His Celtic designs and calligraphy are world famous and iconic in the Isle of Man. Today both his art work for Liberty & Co and his watercolours are highly sought after.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1868. In 1884 he began an apprenticeship with John Hutchinson and began attending evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art. In 1889 he became an architectural assistant with Honeyman and Keppie along with enrolling at the Glasgow School of Art. In 1890 he won a travelling scholarship and toured Italy before settling down into practice. An outstanding architect, furniture designer, and painter, who pioneered the Modern Movement in Scotland, Mackintosh’s works exist as the greatest flowering of the British Arts and Crafts movement in either Scotland or England. Mackintosh sadly died in London in 1928.
